When the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa was closed in January for construction, FDOT did a test on cameras that are installed on the bridge. They used the camera and simulated more than 140 wrong-way drivers. The cameras caught all of them so that’s an indication the cameras are working. In recent years, FDOT has also installed Wrong-Way Driver message boards and road markings on highways, roads, and off-ramps.

While lockdowns have been in place around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, many people only ventured out on four wheels for tasks like the weekly shop. At the end of March 2020, road transport was down by 50 percent, according to the International Energy Agency. New vehicle sales have naturally suffered from this. What is intriguing is that this has mainly affected conventional cars with internal combustion engines (ICE). According to BloombergNEF, demand for electric vehicles (EVs) stayed up fairly consistently around the world in the first quarter of 2020.
Florida’s transportation revenue takes a hit

Pointing to issues such as the coronavirus pandemic, economists say Florida will collect about $1.5 billion less than expected in transportation-related revenues during the next several years. The economists, who meet as the Revenue Estimating Conference, said in a new report that the cumulative amount of money going into the State Transportation Trust Fund during a period ending in the 2025-2026 fiscal year would be $1.485 billion below earlier projections, or 5.7 percent.

DeSantis made the announcement during a Friday roundtable discussion with the Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Kevin Thibault and other transportation industry leaders at the Hilton Orlando-Bonnet Creek Resort in Orlando. Now the consensus in the transportation-research community, 10 years ago, we said we need to charge per mile instead of per gallon. That’s the most sustainable way forward. But the public is not very keen on it. In a synthesis of studies that came out a few years ago, only about 24% of the population seems to think this is a good idea. Part of this is because the media has portrayed this as Big Brother in your car. As if it has to be done by GPS and if every mile you travel is minutely tracked. It seems like a big privacy intrusion Also, people don’t believe that this would replace the gas tax, they are suspicious of government. They think – oh yeah, sure – this will be just another tax
